There are so many products in the grocery store. Most companies are targeting the latest fads or trends going on at the time. It is usually aimed at making people healthier. But, when you look around at the population of our country roughly 2/3 of us, or over 200 million people, are either considered overweight or even obese. Why is that if companies are making healthier foods? Could it be that the foods are not healthier at all?

One of the most popular types of food you see on the shelves is "fat free". What they don't tell you is that the foods are usually loaded with extra sugar in the absence of the fat. What they also don't mention is these foods often have high fructose corn syrup and/or partially hydrogenated oils. All of these usually end up turning to fat anyway.

Another popular statement now found on foods is "0Trans Fats". But, when you look at the ingredients list, if you do look, you once again see partially hydrogenated oils. These ARE trans fats. It wasn't until recently that the government started requiring companies to list these oils as trans fats.

The reason I mention these two examples, and they aren't the only ones, is because I am trying to point out that we need to be much more aware of the foods we are putting in our mouths. If we trust the billion dollar companies to protect, or watch out for us, then we will end up getting fat and unhealthy. Oh wait, we are there already.

Not only is it important to be able to read a label on the food and understand it but we should also be aware of how other foods interact with our bodies. Some people have no idea that certain foods we eat cause us to be hungry within 30 minutes after eating. We end up eating again. It is no wonder we are getting fat as a nation. There are dozens of excellent resources available from books, to magazines, to web sites. Take advantage of them and watch the fat melt away.
